Are you struggling with embedding images in Adobe Illustrator? It is super easy! Follow these steps to make sure your images are embedded correctly and stay part of your file:
What Does Embedding Mean?
Embedding an image stores the image directly in your Illustrator file. This means you don’t have to worry about losing links to external files.
How to Embed Images in Illustrator?
Open Your Illustrator File
Start by opening your project where you want to embed an image.Place the Image
- Go to the top menu and select File > Place.
- Choose the image from your computer and click Place.
The image will now appear on your artboard, but it’s linked (not embedded) at this point.
Select the Image
- Click on the image to select it.
- You’ll notice a small icon next to the file name in the Links Panel (usually on the right side).
This icon indicates whether the image is embedded or linked.
Embed the Image
- Go to the Links Panel.
(If it’s not visible, enable it from Window > Links.) - With the image selected, click the small menu in the top-right corner of the Links Panel.
Then, select Embed Image(s).
- Go to the Links Panel.
Done!
The image is now part of your Illustrator file.
You can verify this because the file name in the Links Panel will no longer have the link icon.
Why Embed Images?
- Portability: Embedded images stay in the file, so you don’t lose them when moving your project.
- Editing Convenience: You don’t need to re-link files if the original gets moved or deleted.
Pro Tips
- File Size: Embedding images increases the file size.
Consider linking for high-res images unless you need them embedded. - Editing Images: Once embedded, you can no longer edit the image in an external program like Photoshop unless you re-link it.
